Crowdsourcing creativity - EXPO Short Food Movie

EXPO is a global non-commercial event established since 1851, dedicated to spreading knowledge in all of its shapes and sizes. Each edition is dedicated to a theme of universal interest - such as developments in science and technology, and the understanding of collective challenges that contemporary society has to face.

The Short Food Movie initiative - ‘Feed your Mind, Film your Planet’- is a global competition that called for a creative use of video to interpret the theme of Expo Milano 2015: ‘Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life’. It is a project organized by Fondazione Cinema per Roma and Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia.

EXPO required a platform robust enough to manage a very large volume of short video entries to be uploaded, viewed and voted by users all over the world. Besides video intake and voting, an internal judging system was needed. The platform also had to be intuitive and easy to use.

Skipso solution

Skipso designed and provided a fully branded video crowdsourcing platform. The solution showcased a dedicated 1-step-upload system, enabling global distribution and set up to support 20,000+ submissions from all over the world. Voting and multiple rounds of scoring functionalities were built into the platform for users and judges to shortlist their favourites. Users could view the entries in any order and according to any category, creating their very own Short Food Movie narrative.

Other unique features included a report abuse button, an algorithm to authenticate votes and the ability for admins to download all videos from the site.

Results The Short Food Movie crowdsourcing contest generated over 1000 entries from users in over 50 countries. Met with critical international media acclaim, during the event, all submissions collected through the platform were projected onto the global video mosaic installation within EXPO’s Pavilion Zero.

What EXPO Says
