About:
In 2002 Massachusetts adopted a Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) to encourage the generation of clean, renewable electricity in the state using indigenous resources such as wind, solar, and biomass. Under this ambitious and forward-thinking legislation, Massachusetts must generate 20 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by the year 2025. To help meet this goal, Madera Energy, Inc., a Massachusetts-based developer of renewable energy projects, is developing the Pioneer Renewable Energy (PRE) project, a 47 megawatt (MW) biomass combined heat and power (CHP) plant. Pioneer Renewable Energy will employ low emission, advanced biomass conversion technology to produce reliable, sustainable and renewable electricity from clean woody biomass materials. The facility will also have the ability to provide steam and heat to nearby homes and businesses. The Pioneer Renewable Energy project will help to diversify the energy supply in Massachusetts, reducing our states’ dependence on fossil fuels and helping to combat global warming by producing carbon-neutral electricity, steam, and hot water. The project will also create significant new employment in the region and add substantially to the local tax base.
